Abstract
No
In this study, with the theme "The Other Side: Siblings of Persons with Disabilities", it was our intention to analyze and understand the fraternal relationship between healthy siblings and siblings with disabilities, responding to questions such as: What changes in the family life cycle? What implications did they have for the development of a healthy sibling's life? Will a healthy sibling have quality of life? Can a healthy brother at some point have been harmed or neglected by the family system and other systems that surround him (e.g., society, school, associations)? Will it make sense for the foundation of an association of support not only to families but specifically to sibling caregivers? This study is part of a research paradigm of qualitative nature, in which the data collection instruments were chosen in order to cover the assumptions of the data, following the guidelines and procedures of a case study. The sample chosen for this research consists of five "healthy" siblings (n = 5), aged over 18 years, whose siblings are deficient, with different pathologies and different degrees of severity. With regard to the method, we chose a qualitative study, using documentary sources, and face-to-face interviews. After comparing the collected data, we conclude that the quality of life of healthy siblings is proportionally affected by their brother's disability. The motivation is based on the great concern of the approximation of the adult age of their brothers, as well as the aging of their parents. The results of this research contribute to the reflection on the fraternal relationship between healthy siblings and siblings with disabilities, opening the way for future studies.
