Abstract
Recently, the literature has shown that self-compassion is effective in reducing stress, and can also play an important role in the context of parenting. The present study analyzes a sample of 407 parental figures, the relationship between self-compassion, parental stress and the sense of parental competence, as well the contribution of self-compassion to explain parental satisfaction. The results show that mothers tend to report more parental concerns than fathers. In addition, parents who have identified the presence of a clinical diagnosis in their children are distinguished from those whose children have no diagnosis because they have higher levels of common humanity, isolation, over-identification, stress and parental concerns. In the multiple regression analyzes the results show that while for parents with children without diagnosis, parental satisfaction is explained by higher levels of mindfulness, lower levels of self-criticism and parental concerns, for parents with a diagnosis of their children, parental satisfaction is explained by higher levels of common humanity, less predisposition to isolation and less parental concerns. The results obtained from the mediation analysis reveal a significant indirect effect of self-compassion on the relationship between parental concerns and parental satisfaction. This study represents an important contribution to research and clinical practice, highlighting the importance of developing self-compassion skills in parents, helping them to deal with their parenting concerns and consequently increasing parental satisfaction.
