Seismic analysis of a portuguese vernacular building
2018-03 - Barros, Ricardo; Rodrigues, Hugo; Varum, Humberto; Costa, Aníbal; Correia, Mariana
Rammed-earth constructions are present all over the world and are common in Portugal, especially in the southern part of the country. In recent years, several research works published on this topic focused on characterizing the mechanical properties and understanding the structural behavior of buildings through experimental and numerical works. Much of the work focused on the characterization of the seismic vulnerability of rammed-earth construction. The research presented in this paper offers another contribution on this topic, particularly in understanding the influence of construction elements in a vernacular seismic culture. On the basis of a simplified case study, derived from a real building, a set of numerical analyses was carried out to assess the influence of the geometry, layout, and different retrofitting solutions typical of vernacular rammed-earth constructions on behavior and seismic performance.

Development of a numerical tool for the seismic vulnerability assessment of vernacular architecture
2021-01-03 - Ortega, Javier; Vasconcelos, Graça; Rodrigues, Hugo; Da Silva Miranda, Tiago Filipe; Correia, Mariana
Aiming at protecting the vernacular heritage located in earthquake prone areas, the paper presents the development and validation of the numerical tool that constitutes the core of a novel seismic vulnerability assessment method: Seismic Assessment of the Vulnerability of Vernacular Architecture Structures (SAVVAS). An extensive numerical modeling campaign was carried out to evaluate and quantify the influence of several parameters on the seismic response of vernacular buildings. The results were compiled into a database on which regression analysis could be performed to extract correlations between seismic capacity and qualitative and simple quantitative data that can be obtained from visual inspection.

Avaliação de sítios culturais património mundial
    2019 - Correia, Mariana

An overview of university and post-university education in vernacular architecture
2023-11-29 - Andrade, Bruno; Sousa, Goreti; Ribeiro, Telma; Correia, Mariana; Lima, Ana
One of the premises advocated by the two European projects – VerSus / Lessons from Vernacular Heritage to Sustainable Architecture and VerSus+ / Heritage for people – is that vernacular heritage, both in its tangible and intangible components, can teach invaluable lessons and principles concerning sustainable architecture. Vernacular architecture is indeed a good example concerning sustainability, since it fully integrates cultural, social, and economical aspects, but especially constructive traditions while respecting the surrounding nature and habitat. In order to reach the full potential of these lessons and assure vernacular heritage protection and survival in this fast-paced world, a strategy for its teaching and awareness is required. University training plays a central role in this outcome, since it can raise awareness for the values of vernacular architecture in the sustainable development of cities and communities. In this sense, this chapter will present a series of good practices of university education, associated with this important challenge.

    Conservation of earthen building materials
2018-12 - Guerrero, Luis; Correia, Mariana
Worldwide, there is a unique, diverse, and fragile earthen archaeological heritage that is at risk. The difficulties to conserve earthen heritage are many, and there is evident recurrent lack of knowledge on how to proceed when addressing its conservation. This entry reviews some of the technical strategies that have been applied in recent years, including preventive measures such as reburial of excavated structures, sheltering, and surface coating; and modification of the earth material through stabilizers, additives, adhesives, and the use of inorganic, natural organic, and synthetic organic consolidants. Structural reinforcement through nonintrusive and intrusive measures is also discussed. The survival of earthen built heritage is a challenge that needs to be addressed with thoughtfulness, knowledge, and humbleness.

Managing vernacular knowledge for builders and designers
2023-11-29 - Dipasquale, Letizia; Florentino, Rui; Ribeiro, Telma; Correia, Mariana
Values of authenticity, identity, and cultural significance that are often associated with historical cities and heritage centres are undoubtedly linked to a continuity in traditional knowledge. Building masters have been responsible not only for keeping the tradition alive but also for the conservation of the local architecture. Based on their experience, know-how, creativity, and craft skills, the masons are able to explore the local materials and adapt them to their construction needs (Karakul, 2015). The transmission of vernacular knowledge is a practical, dynamic, and reactive process. It is usually an 'on site' apprenticeship, through observation, practice, and experiential learning. Due to the progressive loss of masters and apprentices, direct on-site transmission is not always guaranteed. In fact, especially in western countries we have witnessed a progressive loss of knowledge, know-how, techniques, and use of natural and low-impact materials for construction. To counteract this process, the role of public and private entities that try to keep traditional skills alive through the organisation of workshops, courses or training field schools is indeed relevant. During workshops and short courses architects and professionals can understand the materials and procedures, as well as the technical limits of building techniques and their implementations, all of which is useful information for a good design. For builders and craftsmen, it is essential that the experience lasts longer and can be repeated. In all these cases, oral transmission and observation are the main way of transmitting tacit knowledge.

Assessment of the influence of horizontal diaphragms on the seismic performance of vernacular buildings
2018-01-27 - Ortega, Javier; Vasconcelos, Graça; Rodrigues, Hugo; Correia, Mariana
The awareness and preservation of the vernacular heritage and traditional construction techniques and materials is crucial as a key element of cultural identity. However, vernacular architecture located in earthquake prone areas can show a particularly poor seismic performance because of inadequate construction practices resulting from economic restraints and lack of resources. The horizontal diaphragms are one of the key aspects influencing the seismic behavior of buildings because of their major role transmitting the seismic actions to the vertical resisting elements of the structure. This paper presents a numerical parametric study adopted to understand the seismic behavior and resisting mechanisms of vernacular buildings according to the type of horizontal diaphragm considered. Detailed finite element modeling and nonlinear static (pushover) analyses were used to perform the thorough parametric study aimed at the evaluation and quantification of the influence of the type of diaphragm in the seismic behavior of vernacular buildings. The reference models used for this study simulate representative rammed earth and stone masonry vernacular buildings commonly found in the South of Portugal. Therefore, this paper also contributes for a better insight of the structural behavior of vernacular earthen and stone masonry typologies under seismic loading.
