Biografia
Carla Azevedo Lobo é doutorada em Gestão pela Universidade Portucalense. É Professora Auxiliar da Universidade Portucalense e leciona em cursos de Licenciatura, Mestrado e Doutoramento, na área das Ciências Empresariais. É também Coordenadora do Curso de Licenciatura em Gestão, desde 2010. É investigadora do REMIT (Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies). Foi a Investigadora Responsável do Projeto de Investigação ("IEcPBI”) na área dos Negócios Internacionais, financiado pelo COMPETE 2020, FEDER e FCT, entre 2018 - 2022.

REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies
Centro de investigação que que tem como objetivo principal produzir e disseminar conhecimento teórico e aplicado que possibilite uma maior compreensão das dinâmicas e tendências económicas, empresariais, territoriais e tecnológicas do mundo contemporâneo e dos seus efeitos socioeconómicos. O REMIT adota uma perspetiva multidisciplinar que integra vários domínios científicos: Economia e Gestão; Ciências e Tecnologia; Turismo, Património e Cultura.
Founded in 2017, REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies is a research unit of Portucalense University. Based on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective it aims at responding to social challenges through a holistic approach involving a wide range of scientific fields such as Economics, Management, Science, Technology, Tourism, Heritage and Culture.
Grounded on the production of advanced scientific knowledge, REMIT has a special focus on its application to the resolution of real issues and challenges, having as strategic orientations:
- the understanding of local, national and international environment;
- the development of activities oriented to professional practice, namely in the business world.

O insucesso nos mercados internacionais pode levar a perdas de oportunidades de mercado, mas também a uma maior probabilidade de se agravarem as possibilidades de sobreviver no longo prazo. As empresas têm de encontrar novas formas para desenvolver vantagens competitivas que passam por procurar e adquirir novas competências, recursos e capacidades. O conhecimento é um importante recurso estratégico devido ao seu impacto na capacidade competitiva da empresa. Em muitos casos as empresas, nomeadamente as mais pequenas (International New Ventures – INV) podem ganhar acesso a esses recursos, incluindo conhecimentos específicos de mercado, através de formas alternativas de gestão, tais como as redes industriais. Integrar uma rede pode facilitar o acesso a recursos específicos de mercado, nomeadamente ao conhecimento, que uma empresa isolada não poderia ter de outra forma. This paper studies the impact of migration on bilateral trade, using data for remittances as a proxy for migrants in an augmented panel data gravity model framework. Using data for Portuguese bilateral trade with 187 countries for the period 2008-2017, and controlling for other determinants of trade through a standard gravity model, we find that there is a significant impact of remittances on bilateral trade both in terms of exports and imports, particularly regarding some specific types of goods. The evidence of a significant relation between migration and trade has important implications, since it can provide policymakers an alternative option to promote trade and internationalization beyond conventional trade policy.Publicação Acesso Aberto International business performance and the enhancers of the internationalization strategy in Portuguese firms2019 - Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Durão, Natércia; Santos-Pereira, CarlaAs business has become increasingly global, firms have been defied to develop a distinct approach in terms of business resources, skills and capabilities. The way in which these factors are organized and directed depend upon the role played by the entrepreneur within the company. In other words, the entrepreneur's role can define the company's ability to acquire and operationalize its resources, thus being able to influence business performance, especially of international businesses. Research on factors affecting internationalization is attracting growing interest, but few empirical works focus on the perspective of the entrepreneur. Aiming to analyze the existence of an association between international business performance and the factors that act, on the entrepreneur perspective, as enhancers of the internationalization strategy, an online questionnaire survey was conducted with several variables, based on the literature review. Data collected from the 311 valid responses (Portuguese international firms) were treated by IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 software. The statistical analyses used were Descriptive Analysis (frequency analysis, descriptive statistics and graphical representations), Inferential Analysis (Spearman´s ordinal correlation, Kruskall-Wallis Test and Chi-Square Test), Reliability Analysis (Cronbach´s alpha) and Categorical Principal Components Analysis (CATPCA). In accordance with International New Ventures Theory, the Strategic Choice view and Network theory, we found evidence of the positive correlation between international experience of the employees and the percentage of business that resulted from internationalization. We also concluded that there is evidence of the importance of specific skills of the employees, of propensity to take risks and the importance of Networks, in international business performance.Publicação Acesso Aberto Public policies for internationalization: a study for portuguese firms2020 - Biscaia, Ricardo; Ferreira, Ana Teresa; Matos, André; Oliveira, Susana; Lobo, Carla AzevedoInternationalization can be considered as a gradual and evolutionary process in which firms progressively increase their involvement in international business. Most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that internationalize face a variety of constraints in terms of resources and skills, information, financial capital, the experience of their managers, as well as the constraints inherent to the vulnerability of the external environment. Many firms that could succeed in international markets may not have the resources to make the investment. It is also widely acknowledged that the external institutional environment in which firms are embedded may shape firms' strategic responses. Internationalization is a beneficial process for the firm and for the national and local economy and can generate economies of scale in local firms and promote the transfer of technology and managerial knowledge, generating growth and employment. These benefits explain the implementation of export promotion activities and publicly funded programs, as the benefits justify the costs associated with this government expenditure. In light with such facts, governmental assistance may be able to promote the internationalization process of firms. In the international business literature, researchers have examined how home and host market institutions affect the internationalization strategy of multinational enterprises (MNEs), but our focus is to understand how the home institutional environment, and more specifically the public policies act or not as an enhancing factor for internationalization. This paper tackles this question by using a novel survey dataset of 320 Portuguese firms and a quantitative approach based on a regression analysis. We aim at identifying which firm and managerial characteristics are related with a more proficient use of public support for internationalization. The originality of this research lies in the fact that it seeks to ascertain the importance of public policies to support internationalization, in the entrepreneur's perspective.Publicação Acesso Aberto The importance of the skills in business digitalization for the internationalization strategy: Evidence for Portuguese firms2020 - Santos-Pereira, Carla; Durão, Natércia; Moreira, Fernando; Lobo, Carla AzevedoTo meet the requirements of both national and international competition firms need to engage in a continuous innovation process and constantly restructure their operations. Firms must find new ways to develop a competitive advantage, which entails searching for and acquiring new skills, resources and competences. Traditional theories of internationalization focused mainly on multinational firms, giving less importance to entrepreneurs with their small businesses. However, the development of the business world has been breaking all boundaries with the increasing internationalization of firms, not dependent on their size, activity sector or geographical area of origin. It is also widely acknowledged that organizations have suffered a large evolution at the technological level where the traditional barriers of information and knowledge transferring have been progressively eliminated. Digital transformation (DT), in business practice can enable significant competitive advantage. DT can also be seen as a deep and accelerating transformation with regard to processes, activities, competences and models, in order to take advantage of the changes and opportunities offered by the inclusion of digital technologies into an organization. In the literature of business internationalization, a large number of scientific studies focus on the determinants of internationalization and more specifically, on their relationship with the success / failure of internationalization. However, few of them analyze the entrepreneur’s perspective. Therefore, this work aims to present a study focused on the entrepreneur’s perception about the internationalization process of his company, more specifically, about the factors that enhanced the company entry into foreign markets as well as the constraints found in this process. The case of portuguese industrial SMEs2022-01-25 - Maldonado, Isabel; Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Pacheco, Luís MiguelIn the last decades, the academic literature has devoted considerable attention to the determinants of export performance. In result of those research efforts in identifying and examining the influence of such determinants, the literature presents a wide set of variables associated with higher levels of exports. This paper provides a contribution to that literature by trying to evidence the impact of firm certification—namely, in terms of the firm’s quality, environmental, and health and safety management systems—on export performance. The paper analyses an unbalanced sample of 1684 Portuguese industrial SMEs for the period 2010 to 2020, uses other determinants of internationalization as control variables, and explores the possibility of moderating effects on the certification–internationalization relationship. Two alternative econometric methods are employed: a random-effects model and a Tobit model. The results evidence the importance for firms, especially in the low or medium–low technology sectors, to have certain ISO certifications in order to further develop their export activities and increase their foreign acceptance, particularly in the European Union markets. Further, certification seems to reinforce the positive relation between firm size and internationalization.Publicação Acesso Aberto International diversification of SMEs: The role of foreign capital2019-10 - Pacheco, Luís Miguel; Maldonado, Isabel; Lobo, Carla AzevedoThe aim of this paper is to empirically examine the relationship between the firms’ ownership and control structure, in particular the presence of foreign capital, and their internationalization levels. The internationalization of Portuguese SMEs depends on a multitude of factors, being the impact of foreign investment inflows directed to industrial SMEs a usually forgotten factor. This paper fills that gap using a balanced panel data of 5,722 firms for an eight year period beginning in 2010, researching if the presence of foreign capital influences the level and scope of internationalization, and controlling for the effects of variables such as profitability, age, size, indebtedness and sector of activity. The country of origin of the foreign capital is considered and possible non-linear effects are also tested. The results evidence that the presence in SMEs of foreign shareholders positively influences internationalization. Also, there seems to exist a non-linear relation between the development level of the country of origin of the share capital and internationalization, with the results indicating that firms with capital originated from more advanced countries attain a higher degree of internationalization.Publicação Acesso Aberto Business internationalization inducing factors: The importance of knowledge and relational networks2017 - Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Maldonado, IsabelCompanies are currently required to continually innovate and restructure their operations in order to respond to the requirements of national and international competition. Companies have to find new ways to develop competitive advantages and acquire new skills, resources and capabilities. Based on the opinions of different factors considered as inducers of the internationalization process by companies that internationalized early in their life cycle. We developed an empirical study with 320 portuguese international firms and used the statistical software AMOS for a confirmatory factor analysis. We propose a Theoretical Model in accordance to Human Capital Theory, International New Ventures Theory, and the Population Ecology Approach. This paper delves into the intricate relationship among these three pillars and their transformative impact on businesses, economies, and societies worldwide. Digitalization, characterized by the adoption of digital technologies, serves as a catalyst for internationalization, breaking down traditional barriers and fostering seamless connectivity across borders. Concurrently, the imperative of sustainability compels organizations to operate with consideration for environmental, social, and economic factors. Bearing this reality in mind, the aim of this study is to investigate, from the perspective of entrepreneurs of internationalized Portuguese companies, the factors contributing most to the importance they attach to digitalization in inducing internationalization. Using statistical methods of regression analysis (linear and logistic multivariate regression), the study seeks to identify the complex interactions between digitalization strategies and international expansion efforts. The results shed light on the critical role that digitalization plays in supporting internationalization goals and furthering sustainability objectives, stating that there is a strong connection between the importance of digitalization partnerships, counselling, and access to the new technologies and resources. Additionally, budget constraints may pose challenges for companies prioritizing digitalization efforts.
