Publication Open Access KPIs for digital accelerators: A critical review2025-07-04 - Rodrigues, Nuno J. P.This paper proposes a conceptual framework for studying the KPIs of digital accelerators. Therefore, a critical review was developed and we derived clear recommendations in terms of KPIs that researchers must consider when evaluating digital accelerators applicable to startups. Digital startup businesses must focus on product, external factors, process, capability, organizational factors, and market to achieve sustainability. The proposed framework asserts that profitability, growth, productivity, and size are key categories that should be taken into consideration while grouping KPIs. These categories should be grouped into three different dimensions, economic, technological, and organization/client. The proposed KPIs can help the accelerator program evaluate its own performance and make the necessary adjustments to improve the program and eventually measure the startup’s success.Publication Open Access Challenges in Human Resource Management for Millennial and Generation Z Cohorts: Difficulties in Talent Recruitment and Retention: Application to the Tourism and Hospitality Sector2025-12-21 - Sousa, João P.; Oliveira, Carlos M.; Rodrigues, Nuno J. P.This study explores how the unique characteristics of Generation Y/Millennials and Generation Z influence talent retention challenges in the hospitality sector and identifies Human Resource Management (HRM) strategies that effectively address these generational dynamics. The multigenerational workforce in this industry spans multiple cohorts, each with distinct work values and expectations, and these generational differences in work attitudes have compelled Human Resource (HR) departments to adopt a range of tailored recruitment and retention strategies. This qualitative research examines how hotel directors and HR managers in the city of Porto, Portugal perceive the recruitment challenges associated with younger generations and what strategies they use to overcome them. The findings highlight specific traits of Millennial and Generation Z employees, confirming that these cohorts present unique recruitment and retention challenges, and validate targeted response strategies to address those challenges. Overall, the study sheds light on sector-specific hurdles, multigenerational management issues, and effective HRM practices for attracting and retaining young employees (Generation Y/Millennials and Generation Z).Publication Open Access E-Leadership Competencies and Organizational Preference for Telework: Evidence from the Portuguese Context2025-12-15 - Pinto, Débora; Figueiredo, Paula C. N.; Rodrigues, Nuno J. P.This study examines the relationship between e-leadership competencies—assessed through a E-Leadership Competencies (SEC) model—and organizational preference for telework in Portugal. In the context of increasing digitalization and following the widespread experience of remote work driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, it becomes essential to understand the role of e-competence in leading geographically dispersed teams. A quantitative investigation was conducted through the application of an online questionnaire to e-leaders of companies based in Portugal whose teams benefit from telework arrangements. The results indicate that only three of the six e-competencies identified in the SEC model show statistical significance in e-leadership effectiveness, with no relationship observed between perceived effectiveness and organizational investment in telework. Nevertheless, more than 80% of respondents reported that telework has been increasing within their organizations. This study contributes to the adaptation of the SEC model to the Portuguese context and reinforces its importance as a tool for diagnosing and developing e-leadership competencies. Theoretical and practical implications highlight the need to explore new dimensions—including hard skills—and applying the model across different sectors and types of organizations, thus supporting the preparation of e-leaders for an increasingly digital world of work. Overall, by evidencing the SEC model’s successful adaptation in Portugal, the findings underscore the model’s broader applicability and potential for generalization across diverse organizational settings.
