AI’s invisible touch: how effortless browsing shapes customer perception, experience and engagement in online retail
2024-12-14 - Lopes, João M.; Trancoso, Tiago; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
This study explores the influence of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled ease of use on customer perception, experience, and engagement in online retail stores. Through a quantitative analysis of 1438 responses from Portuguese consumers, the research reveals that AI-enabled ease of use positively influences customers’ perceived control, concentration, and cognitive enjoyment while browsing online stores. These perceptions, in turn, contribute to the elicitation of awe, which is found to be a crucial mediating factor in the relationship between customer perceptions and purchase intention. The study highlights the significant role of awe in strengthening the link between customer perceptions and purchase intent, rendering previously non-significant direct effects statistically significant. The findings offer valuable implications for online retailers seeking to leverage AI technologies to enhance customer experiences and drive sales. By prioritizing ease of use, cognitive enjoyment, and perceived control, and strategically leveraging the mediating role of awe, retailers can create engaging and memorable online shopping experiences that ultimately translate to increased customer satisfaction and purchase intention.

Unveiling triple bottom line’s influence on business performance
2025-01-21 - Lopes, João M.; Nogueira, Elisabete; Gomes, Sofia
Addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges has become a pressing global priority. The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework offers a holistic approach for evaluating corporate performance by integrating economic, envi- ronmental, and social perspectives. Despite its increasing adoption in both managerial and academic research, there remains a significant gap in understanding how the TBL framework influences business performance. To address this, the study conducts a bibliometric review of 207 publications from the Web of Science database. The review highlights the multifaceted impact of practices linked to the TBL dimensions on business performance while introducing the TBL Influence on Business Performance model. This model provides valuable insights into how businesses can effectively apply TBL principles to address socio-environmental challenges, foster innovation, and achieve sustained long-term performance. The findings contribute valuable theoretical and practical insights into how organizations can utilize TBL principles to strengthen resilience, innovation, and performance in the face of global socio-environmental challenges.

Educational insights into digital entrepreneurship: the influence of personality and innovation attitudes
2025-02-05 - Lopes, João M.; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
Digital entrepreneurship implies a radical transformation of economic paradigms, allowing new entrepreneurs to create a more sustainable, creative, and connected future. This study explores the influence of higher education students’ personality traits on their innovative digital attitude and digital entrepreneurial intention. It also explores the moderating role of digital entrepreneurial education in the relationship between innovative digital attitude and digital entrepreneurial intention. To this end, a sample of 417 higher education students residing in Portugal was collected through a questionnaire made available online, and the partial least square method was applied to a formulated research model. The results reveal that an innovative digital attitude positively influences the digital entrepreneurial intention of higher education students in Portugal. The Big-Five personality traits directly affect innovative digital attitudes but not their digital entrepreneurial intention. However, this relationship becomes significant when the relationship between personality traits and digital entrepreneurial intention is mediated by an innovative digital attitude. Furthermore, the intensifying role of digital entrepreneurial education was demonstrated in converting students' innovative digital attitudes into their digital entrepreneurial intention. Thus, this study indicates that personality traits, which are still scarcely addressed in entrepreneurship, can be an explanation of innovative digital attitudes and predictors of digital entrepreneurial intention, as well as the important role of digital entrepreneurial education in boosting digital entrepreneurship.

Nexus between triple bottom line and economic development: an exploratory analysis of economic, environmental and social dimensions
    2024-03-08 - Nogueira, Elisabete
Recent global events, such as Covid-19 and the conflict in Ukraine, have disrupted the notion of a sustainable society, resulting in apprehension and economic uncertainty. These multifaceted crises have caused increased unemployment rates and heightened poverty levels, further enhancing existing concerns regarding societal welfare. Consequently, sustainability has gained significant prominence, compelling enterprises to adopt sustainable practices to maintain competitiveness. The triple bottom line framework has risen in importance as an indispensable tool for holistically addressing sustainability concerns. It places equal emphasis on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions, presenting a comprehensive approach that fosters sustainability, resilience, and innovation. It acknowledges the intrinsic connection between companies’ achievements and society’s overall well-being, while strengthening companies competitive positioning. The general objective of this thesis is to understand the influence that triple bottom line, and that each of its dimensions, economic, environmental and social, can exert on economic development. Establishing business strategies that will enable companies to achieve greater positive outcomes, while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. A profound understanding of these relations is imperative for ensuring enduring success in an ever-evolving global landscape. In order to achieve the proposed objective, a typology of mixed research, as outlined in Chapters 2 to 6, was employed. The research encompasses the deductive process and five studies that employ the following methodology: 1) bibliometric study; 2), 3) and 5) multiple linear regression models; and 4) meta-regression. Examining the results obtained, it has been established that the triple bottom line acts as an effective partner in the pursuit of boosting economic development, as well as contributing to the enhancement of sustainable outcomes. The three dimensions of the framework are geared towards achieving a unified goal, thereby enhancing firms’ performance. Theoretical frameworks that extend beyond the confines of economic sustainability, embracing the broader facets of environmental preservation and social well-being, are presented. Moreover, the research bridges the gap between theoretical constructs and practical application. Practical insights for both corporate entities and governmental bodies are provided to facilitate the translation of theoretical insights into concrete strategies. In summary, this thesis highlights the growing significance of sustainability in the contemporary business landscape, while it is focused on advancing theoretical understanding, practical application, and the scientific foundations of triple bottom line within the realm of the economic development.

The contribution of the labour practices to organizational performance: The mediating role of social sustainability
2024-04-18 - Lopes, João M.; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
In the fiercely competitive global business environment, the attainment of excellence is contingent upon the efficient management of human resources and their alignment with sustainable development goals. This study examines the interplay between labour practices, social sustainability and organizational performance, with a focus on the often-ignored perspectives of employees. Employees, often neglected as critical stakeholders, shape corporate values and strategy. The study uses a quantitative approach, having applied the partial least square method for the proposed research model. Questionnaire responses from 574 Portuguese employees reveal that labour practices (employee development, employee participation and equal opportunity) positively influence perceived social sustainability. Perceived social sustainability positively influences perceived organizational performance. The examined labour practices only exhibit a positive influence on perceived organizational performance when perceived social sustainability acts as a mediator. Companies must place a high priority on the perceptions of their employees to achieve social sustainability. This involves incorporating inclusive, participative and proactive policies regarding human resources policies, thereby leveraging the mutual advantages derived from labour practices. This demonstrates the pivotal role of social sustainability in companies' decision- making processes, as it substantially contributes to enhancing organizational performance. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating social sustainability to maximize organizational performance, providing valuable insights for business leaders. The original model, social sustainability-driven organizational performance, which is based on employees' perceptions, identifies labour practices as antecedents of social sustainability, and the influence of social sustainability, both directly and as a mediator, on organizational performance, is presented

Nature's safecrackers: Decoding substitutability and protecting natural capital in innovation ecosystems SSA and MENA regions
2024-10-24 - Ferreira, João; Lopes, João M.; Dabic, Marina ; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
The innovation ecosystems in economies dependent on natural resources use these assets as fundamental capital to promote development and economic growth. Ensuring the lasting sustainability of these economies represents a difficult challenge, especially in a context of limited and irreplaceable natural capital. This study explores indicators of natural capital protection (environmental quality, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, protection of biodiversity and ecosystems, and cultural and social values) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA), two regions dependent on natural resources. A new panel quantile estimation technique is applied to panel data covering 59 countries from 2019 to 2023. The results indicate that, in SSA economies, lower levels of these indicators contribute positively to higher levels of natural capital protection. In the MENA economies, only higher levels of environmental quality and cultural and social values contribute positively to higher levels of natural capital protection. The critical implications arising from this study emphasize the urgent need to implement strategies aimed at safeguarding natural capital in economies heavily dependent on it. These strategies include resilient urban development, investment in climate resilient infrastructure. The strategies include resilient urban development, investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, recognition and valorization of environmental services, attention to modern renewable energy technologies, environmental education, greater consideration of the balance between environmental sustainability and human well-being by governments, and recognition of the impacts of globalization on environmental sustainability and human development. The uniqueness of this study lies in its pioneering approach to the pressing issues of protecting natural capital in natural resource-dependent economies. It is a pioneer in analyzing several countries in two regions regarding synergies between protecting natural capital and its indicators in economies dependent on natural resources.

Anthropomorphism in artificial intelligence: A game-changer for brand marketing
2025-01-15 - Lopes, João M.; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
The expansion of brands adopting artificial intelligence services with human characteristics, such as chatbots, has rev- olutionized digital marketing strategies, transforming how companies reach and engage customers. This technologi- cal innovation is reshaping digital interactions between companies and consumers, offering a more personalized and efficient experience. This study explores the influence of chatbot anthropomorphism on customer engagement and purchasing decision-making with brands that use this artificial intelligence service. Data from a questionnaire with 1319 participants was analyzed using partial least squares method. Chatbot anthropomorphism has a more positive influence on purchasing decision-making when this relationship is mediated by customer engagement. In turn, customer involvement also has a positive influence on decision-making. The results emphasize that for a greater influence of the chatbot’s anthropomorphism on purchasing decision-making, the customer must first be engaged with the chatbot. This research illuminates a new path in the domain of AI-enabled brand interactions, showing the distinct influence of anthropomorphism in chatbots on customer satisfaction, trust and loyalty, thus revolutioniz- ing traditional paradigms of consumer-brand engagement and decision-making processes. By exploring the intricate dynamics between customer engagement with anthropomorphized chatbots and purchasing decisions, this study breaks new ground, offering unprecedented insight into the transformative potential of human-like chatbot interac- tions in shaping consumer behavior and brand relationships.

Pathways to Circularity: Engagement patterns of European SMEs in the circular Economy
2025-02-05 - Lopes, João M.; Gomes, Sofia; Nogueira, Elisabete
Compliance with the 2030 agenda is forcing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the European Union (EU) to transition from linear to circular business models, boosting the adoption of circular economy (CE) activities. More information is needed to know the transition stage of these companies. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the implementation patterns of nine CE activities by EU SMEs and explore the relationships between the implementation of CE activities and the characteristics of these companies in terms of economic activity and ownership. To this end, we used a sample of 13,322 SMEs from the EU, using the Latent Class Model to identify the implementation patterns of CE activities and correspondence analysis to relate the implementation of CE activities with the characteristics of the SMEs. The results show that in the implementation of CE activities, five patterns of SMEs involvement can be identified, with CE activities being systematically independent in each pattern. It was also demonstrated that the SMEs with the highest probability of engagement are those dedicated to service activities, medium-sized companies established more years ago, with high and growing turnover, which invest most of their turnover annually in CE activities, and those that sell products or services to multiple final destinations. This study contributes to demonstrating that the essential dynamic capabilities of SMEs to become circular must be incorporated into a pattern of implementation of CE activities and that in their implementation, CE activities are not independent of each other but follow a specific pattern of involvement, in which activities are invariably interdependent in relation to other patterns.
