Centro de investigação que que tem como objetivo principal produzir e disseminar conhecimento teórico e aplicado que possibilite uma maior compreensão das dinâmicas e tendências económicas, empresariais, territoriais e tecnológicas do mundo contemporâneo e dos seus efeitos socioeconómicos. O REMIT adota uma perspetiva multidisciplinar que integra vários domínios científicos: Economia e Gestão; Ciências e Tecnologia; Turismo, Património e Cultura. Founded in 2017, REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies is a research unit of Portucalense University. Based on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective it aims at responding to social challenges through a holistic approach involving a wide range of scientific fields such as Economics, Management, Science, Technology, Tourism, Heritage and Culture. Grounded on the production of advanced scientific knowledge, REMIT has a special focus on its application to the resolution of real issues and challenges, having as strategic orientations: - the understanding of local, national and international environment; - the development of activities oriented to professional practice, namely in the business world.

    The role of the ICTs in knowledge transfer: A special focus on Fraunhofer AICOS

    The purpose of this chapter is to review the increasing importance of knowledge in society in general and in economy in particular. Knowledge transfer is more and more important at different levels (e.g., micro and macro-level). The authors also intend to show the role played by ICTs in knowledge transfer. To illustrate this, they use some examples of institutions in Portugal, specifically they explore the case of Fraunhofer AICOS. Under the umbrella of the ICT4D concept, it is analyzed as ICTs can be used to surpass some difficulties of the least developing countries. However, there are also difficulties related to the acceptance and adoption of ICT solutions, as well as special requirements imposed by the reality of the countries.

    The importance of internationalization strategy for innovation in Portuguese firms

    Innovation and internationalization seem to be vital strategies for the survival and growth of companies facing an increasingly competitive global environment. The twoway link between these two factors has become a topic of interest among researchers. Although innovation and internationalization are highly related activities, the role played by innovation in the internationalization process of firms has been analysed by internationalization, others consider that innovation can be a consequence of internationalization process. Given the great importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the growth of economies, part of literature has paid special attention to this kind of enterprises. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between innovation and internationalization within Portuguese firms, in particular to analyse whether Portuguese entrepreneurs consider innovation as an important factor in the process of internationalisation. To achieve this goals, we will use descriptive and inferential data analysis techniques.

    Intellectual property rights and endogenous economic growth uncovering the main gaps in the research agenda

    Introduction Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) are “the rights to use and sell knowledge and inventions” (Greenhalgh and Rogers, 2007: 541), with the aim of guaranteeing adequate returns for innovators and creators. There are different types of intellectual property protection (Granstrand, 2005): old types such as patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks and design rights, and new forms such as breeding rights and database rights. Nonetheless, patents are commonly considered as the most important and representative IPR (e.g., Besen and Raskind, 1991). IPR have a long legal and economic history, since the idea of intellectual property was already present in ancient cultures such as Babylonia, Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire. Mokyr (2009) discusses the relevance of the late 19th century, when political events created a system which supported an executive that was sufficiently well organised to create a “rule of law” and respect private property rights. This argument emerges, in part, in the context of an Industrial Revolution marked by important technological improvements, whereby IPR began gradually to be accorded more respect. (...)

    Endogenous growth and intellectual property rights: a North-South modelling proposal

    In what form should the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) be treated in an endogenous growth model? What are the effects of introducing IPR into a North-South endogenous growth model? In this paper, we develop a general equilibrium endogenous growth model that emphasizes the IPR enforcement effects on growth, in a scenario of North-South technological knowledge diffusion. The economy consists of three sectors, and firms are engaged in step-by-step innovation. In line with the literature, we introduce an IPR parameter that makes imitation more difficult. We find that, in steady state, the increases in IPR protection result in decreases in the growth rate. This result is in line with the literature, which argues that the enforcement of IPR does not always have a positive effect on economic growth and highlights that there is much more work to be done in this field of study, given that the existing results are not consensual. To sum up, we present some suggestions for future research which can help to clarify the relationship between IPR and endogenous growth.

    Endogenous growth and intellectual property rights: A north south modelling proposal with population ageing

    This paper studies the effect of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on economic growth, in the light of population ageing, i.e., in a more realistic context. The analysis is motivated by the implications of population ageing on economic growth. Moreover, this study analyses this relationship in a North-South framework where there is a health-care sector. We conclude that population ageing has no impact on the sign of the IPR effect on economic growth. However, it positively affects the steady-state growth rate. Finally, under some conditions, the presence of the health-care sector also increases the steady-state growth rate.

    The interplay of innovation and internationalisation in the foreign market entry mode and international market selection process of SMEs

    In an interconnected, globalised world where the success of companies increasingly relies on internationalisation, innovation has emerged as a crucial strategic decision for firm’s strong development and competitiveness. While there tends to be a consensus in the literature regarding the growing significance of internationalisation and innovation, certain questions arise regarding the relationship between innovation and entry modes with lower market commitment as well as destination markets with lower risks. This study aims to investigate whether a discernible pattern of relationship exists between internationalisation modes, destination markets, and innovation among small and medium-sized Portuguese firms. To accomplish this research objective, we developed and distributed an online questionnaire survey and collected empirical data from Portuguese SMEs. The final dataset consisted of 310 valid responses, which were subjected to statistical analysis using IBM SPSS 27.0 Statistics software. Considering the categorical nature of the data (measured on a nominal or ordinal scale), we applied robust quantitative analysis techniques. More specifically, we employed exploratory statistical analyses, including univariate and multivariate exploratory factorial analysis (EFA), as well as inferential analysis (e.g., Spearman's correlation and Chi-square test for correlation analysis, and Mann-Whitney nonparametric test). Our findings provide empirical evidence that companies employing internationalisation modes requiring greater commitment, along with those targeting geographically and psycho-logically distant destination markets, tend to attach greater importance to innovation as a determinant of internationalisation. Our study carries important theoretical and practical implications.

    Exploring the relationship between innovation, entry modes and destination countries

    In a world characterized by globalization, where the internationalization of businesses is pivotal for their prosperity, innovation is emerging as a pivotal strategic choice influencing their growth and competitive edge. Despite the broad consensus on the growing importance of internationalization and innovation, some questions arise about the relationship of innovation with entry modes with less commitment to the market and with destination markets with less risks. In order to determine whether there is a pattern of relationship between internationalization modes, destination markets, and innovation for Portuguese firms, the objective is to study this possibility. To achieve this goal, we carried out an online questionnaire survey to collect data. The questionnaire was carefully designed based on a literature review and included various variables related to the internationalization of firms. It was sent to all 8183 firms listed in the AICEP database of Portuguese internationalized firms through Google Forms tool. The data was collected over an 8-month period, starting in May 2019. To analyze the data, we used IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 software, applying a quantitative approach. We employed Quantitative Analysis Methodologies: Univariate and Multivariate Exploratory Factorial Analysis (EFA), Correlation analysis and the nonparametric tests Chi-square and Mann-Whitney. Based on the findings, the empirical evidence clearly demonstrates that firms employing internationalization modes demanding higher commitment, along with those targeting geographically and psychologically distant markets, place significantly greater emphasis on innovation as a pivotal factor driving their international expansion.

    A Possible Relationship Between Internationalization and Innovation Strategies: An Analysis of Portuguese SMEs

Innovation is also considered a key factor for firm’s development and competitiveness. Moreover, the relationship between innovation and internationalization has become a matter of increasingly interest in the literature and can be analysed according to two streams: innovation as cause or consequence of companies’ internationalization. Additionally, given the great importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the growth of economies, part of literature has paid special attention to this kind of enterprises. The purpose of this work is to verify the existence of a possible relationship between internationalization and innovation strategies among Portuguese firms by exploring whether Portuguese entrepreneurs consider innovation as an important factor or a motivation in the internationalization process. To achieve this goals, and based on data obtained from an online questionnaire survey, descriptive and inferential data analysis techniques are used. In particular, graphical representations, descriptive measures and also, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis (with multiple comparisons) non-parametric tests.
