Employment situation of tourism graduates working in and outside the tourism sector
2013 - Costa, Carlos; Breda, Zélia; Malek, Anahita; Durão, Marília
This paper looks at the employment situation of Portuguese tourism graduates, particularly to the differences between the work situation of those employed in the tourism sector and those who are working outside this sector. Data was collected through an online questionnaire applied to the Portuguese tourism graduates in Portugal, comparing their salaries, working hours and schedules, contractual situation, hierarchical position and job satisfaction. Results evidenced that the tourism sector is not taking advantage of the available qualified human resources. Moreover, data suggests that tourism graduates employed outside the tourism sector are facing poorer working situations than those graduates employed within this industry.

How do guests evaluate eco-certified hotels? An analysis of guests’ reviews of Portuguese hotels
2024-06-24 - Pacheco, Luís Miguel; Ramazanova, Makhabbat; Durão, Marília; Nogueira, Sónia; Carvalho, João M. S.
User-generated content and online reviews have become a prominent source of information for tourists in the last couple of decades. At the same time, hospitality firms show an increasing concern with environmental practices, in line with customers’ changes of attitude and awareness of their environmental footprint. This paper analyses the content of reviews posted on TripAdvisor by guests staying in a large sample of environmentally certified hotels. The objective is to find out if sustainability concerns are present in guests’ reviews and identify the most important sustainability attributes. Using the Maxqda and Leximancer software, 1748 reviews from 95 Portuguese hotels were analysed; the content analysis evidences that guests’ predominant themes regarding their experiences are mostly common and independent of the category, average review, or type of travel. Eco-issues are primarily absent from the reviews. Although all analysed hotels are ‘eco-certified’, that label does not seem to be associated with guests’ attitudes and concerns. The results have relevant implications for hospitality managers.

2023-06-06 - Moraes, Michelle; Durão, Marília; Veríssimo, Medéia
Social media has become an indispensable marketing tool for tourism and hospitality, emerging as critical platforms for interaction and communication between brands and consumers. In the hotel industry, as in other sectors, social media plays an essential role in affecting the consumer journey and reshaping managerial practices. The remarkable growth of social media over the past decade has boosted interest in social media research, and the number of publications and citations on this theme has increased in recent years. The objective of this study is to review relevant literature pertaining to social media in the hotel industry using bibliometric analysis. It aims at portraying the current state of the art in this subfield of research, which is expected to continue growing and to identify future research opportunities. The present study uses VOSviewer to analyze research 973 documents published from 2017 to 2021, under the category “Hospitality, Leisure, Sports, Tourism,” collected from the Web of Science database. The analysis uncovers three key research groups and topics addressed in the extant literature on social media in the hotel industry: (1) “E-consumer behavior,” referring to social media influence on the customer decision-making process, customers’ perceptions of hotel services, as well as their evaluation of the hotel experience; (2) “Digital strategies for hotel businesses,” describing how social media can be part of the hotel strategy under different perspectives and unveiling the effect of social media on hotel performance; and (3) “Approaches to social media research in the hotel industry,” focusing on current research approaches, such as the use of sentiment analysis by the hotel industry, and the rise of big data and social media analytics.

Tourism and Hospitality internships in Higher Education: A competency-based framework
2024-09-29 - Quintela, Joana; Durão, Marília; Veríssimo, Medéia; Marques, Jorge
Higher education internships have the general goal of providing an active learning experience that supplements classroom learning, helping students transition to the labor market. Thus, internships can provide a valuable practical background to entering the labor market. Through internships, students can develop and apply the skills, theories, and concepts learned in their study programs, as well as gain industry-specific knowledge and competencies, enhancing their employability. Internships are also perceived as critical experiences influencing students’ decisions to join the tourism and hospitality workforce. First-hand experiences can give students a more robust and realistic view of the industry, playing a decisive role in shaping their future behavior. This research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the on-the-job training experiences of tourism and hospitality management students, modeling a competency-based framework. An exploratory research approach was adopted, combining theoretical and empirical methods: a comprehensive review of the extant literature on relevant skills and competencies for the tourism and hospitality industry and the analysis of undergraduate students’ accounts collected from internship reports that offered insights into the practical experiences of students and the competencies developed herewith. This study proposes a conceptual framework that integrates three sets of competencies: (i) cognitive and functional competencies, (ii) personal and social competencies, and (iii) professional competencies. Active learning experiences such as internships are posited as part of a formative continuum that begins with undergraduate education and transfers to the labor market. The proposed framework advances research in higher-level skill development and assists educators and organizational leaders in developing a graduate-level skilled workforce more efficiently by considering the strategic role of internships.

Entrepreneurship Learning: Applying a Revised Experiential Learning Model to Cultural and Creative Industries
2023-01-03 - Neves, Augusto; Nogueira, Sónia; Durão, Marília; Fernandes, Sandra
This article discusses entrepreneurship and innovation in the context of the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) through interdisciplinary education. Contributions focus on the outcomes of the Erasmus + project FENICE: ‘Fostering Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Cultural and Creative Industries through Interdisciplinary Education’, a project aimed at meeting the current and prospective skills’ needs of the CCIs, both from students and professionals/adult learners. The aim of this article is to propose the application of a revised experiential learning model (ELM) to the development of CCIs, by applying this learning approach to the development of an entrepreneurship education training program. It focuses on various forms of practical teaching, according to different training objectives, aiming at enhancing the quality and relevance of business education for the CCIs, while also fostering their innovative potential and social impact. The outcomes of the project suggest that experiential learning approaches can have an important contribution to entrepreneurial and managerial skills development for the CCIs, providing the sector with professionals who can contribute to the sustainable functioning and development of the creative economy.

Performing a Thematic Analysis: An Exploratory Study about Managers’ Perceptions on Gender Equality
2016 - Costa, Carlos; Breda, Zélia; Pinho, Isabel; Bakas, Fiona; Durão, Marília
The purpose of this paper is to present results from an exploratory study that aims to investigate why gender role alterations in leadership positions is slow. The tourism managers’ perceptions of gender equality, within the workplace, were obtained resorting to focus groups. We chose thematic analysis to identify themes and patterns. This thematic analysis enables a methodological systematization of data. Data were coded using webQDA, a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software that speeds up the team process of analysis. The systematization of information helped overcome the difficulties to synthesize the various interpretations; thus it was possible to generate more ideas and reduce researcher bias. The main outcome of the study was the development of an analytic framework where diverse components fit together by combining and cataloguing six main themes and their sub-themes. This framework is not only an analysis tool but also provides support to develop robust quantitative instruments and facilitate future meta-inference drawn from all data sources of a research project. We defend that mixed methods research is useful for finding credible answers to research questions on complex social phenomena. Discussion about qualitative vs quantitative dichotomy is sometimes irrelevant, because what matters is maximizing the process of research. Exploring the practicalities of using a qualitative methodology as a team of researchers, we contribute to theory development on human resources capitalization.
