Sónia Rolland Sobral

Biografia

Licenciada em Informática de Gestão, mestre em Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores, doutora em Tecnologias e Sistemas de Informação e possui o título de agregado em Ciências da Informação. Desde 1993 é docente da Universidade Portucalense (UPT), sendo atualmente professora associada com agregação. Lecionou em diversos cursos como Engenharia Informática e Engenharia e Gestão Industrial, em diversas instituições como Lodz University of Technology e a Universidade de Aveiro, e em diversos países como Angola e Cabo Verde. Participou em diferentes órgãos, tendo sido presidente do Conselho Pedagógico da UPT. Pertence à comissão de várias conferências internacionais e revistas científicas. É autora de uma centena de publicações, a sua maioria indexadas na SCOPUS e/ou WoS. É membro integrado no REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies, sendo atualmente coordenadora de um dos dois grupos de investigação (Transformação Digital e Inovação nas Organizações). REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies
Centro de investigação que que tem como objetivo principal produzir e disseminar conhecimento teórico e aplicado que possibilite uma maior compreensão das dinâmicas e tendências económicas, empresariais, territoriais e tecnológicas do mundo contemporâneo e dos seus efeitos socioeconómicos. O REMIT adota uma perspetiva multidisciplinar que integra vários domínios científicos: Economia e Gestão; Ciências e Tecnologia; Turismo, Património e Cultura. Founded in 2017, REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies is a research unit of Portucalense University. Based on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective it aims at responding to social challenges through a holistic approach involving a wide range of scientific fields such as Economics, Management, Science, Technology, Tourism, Heritage and Culture. Grounded on the production of advanced scientific knowledge, REMIT has a special focus on its application to the resolution of real issues and challenges, having as strategic orientations: - the understanding of local, national and international environment; - the development of activities oriented to professional practice, namely in the business world.

    Two Decades of Research in e-Learning: A Deep Bibliometric Analysis

    E-learning is the electronic version of distance learning: a planned teaching that presupposes a physical separation between the teacher and the student. The distance is either geographic or temporal, and communication can be asynchronous or synchronous, respectively. E-learning has been a target of high-quality research for the last two decades. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scientific production on e-learning in journals indexed on Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample was composed by 25330 articles from 2000 to 2019. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed that rates publication continue to increase. A report was made on the journals, languages, authors, keywords, organizations and countries that publish in the field. This analysis was done for all articles as well as for the most cited articles. The bibliometric analysis was done for a total of 20 years, as well as for four 5-year periods. This article provides information from the past, but mostly clues about research on e-learning in the future

    Strategies on Teaching Introducing to Programming in Higher Education

    Teaching and learning how to program are not easy tasks: they can be very challenging. Introductory programming courses traditionally have high rates of failures and dropouts. Teachers and researchers must develop strategies to combat this problem. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the scientific production on strategies on teaching how to program in higher education in journals indexed in an international database’ indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus in the years 2000 to 2019. We provide an up-to-date review of the existing literature. To provide a comprehensive survey, we not only categorize existing strategies but also present detailed descriptions of relevant topics such as Active Learning, Pair Programming, Flipped Classroom and Project Based Learning. The sample was composed by 92 articles in total. The first results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed that publication rates increased slowly but have expanded in the last two years, in which journals the articles are published, which are the organizations and countries that publish the most and which are the most cited articles. The motivation for this study is to bear in mind the research that has been done so that it strategies can be used and experienced by teachers who teach programming to undergraduate students.

    Massive Open Online Courses: a bibliometric review

    Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are open courses offered to an indefinite number of participants and accessible through virtual learning environments. These courses have been the subject of research all over the world. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scientific production on Massive Open Online Courses in journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample is composed by 1908 articles in total. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed that the publication continue to increase, in which journals they are published, which are the organizations and countries that publish the most, and which are the most cited articles. We concluded that since Massive Open Online Courses are a reality, there still seems to be a possibility for evolution in good quality publications.

    Predicting students performance in introductory programming courses: a literature review

    The teaching-learning process in programming in university with freshmen is often associated with high failure and dropout rates. These outcomes frustrate both students and teachers and there is a need to verify the causes of these failures. By predicting the causes of these problems, we can try to control them, or at least try to plan the courses to try to avoid failure in the identified cases. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scientific production concerning the prediction of students’ performance in introductory programming courses. This analysis regards articles indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample includes a total of 30 articles. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis show when and where those documents were published, who are the authors and what is the focus of said articles. We also analyzed the most cited documents. We made a summary of the articles. We were able to obtain a global overview of the theme, obtaining a strong analysis that is useful for teachers in the process of helping students achieve success in introductory programming courses at universities.

    Computerized cognitive stimulation for people with dementia or with mild cognitive impairment: a bibliometric review

    Many studies have found that non-pharmacological interventions, such as cognitive stimulation (CS), can benefit people with dementia (PWD) or with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The use of the computerized cognitive stimulation (CCS) had proven to be an ally to those who want to detect and mitigate this disease. Objective: The purpose of this paper was to analyze the scientific production in CCS in PWD or with MCI in journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus since 2000. Methods: Data collected from Web of Science and Scopus during 2000–2019. Results: The data show that dementia research is exponentially developing following the evolution of widespread use of computer science. As such, this article was of enormous importance doing a bibliometric analysis of what has been done in the area since the beginning of this century. The search terms identified 61 papers related to the use of computers applied to CS in PWD or MCI, and the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease had the largest number of publications. The most cited article was the Faucounau et colleagues. Major research’ countries are United Kingdom, Spain and United States. Conclusions: The findings in these papers were analysed to find recommendations for future work in this area. The CCS has been increasingly used as an intervention tool for PWD or MCI, and there still seems to be a possibility for evolution in good quality publications.

    Flipped classrooms for introductory computer programming courses

    Teaching and learning how to program are not easy tasks. Disapproval and dropout rates are a concern for everyone concerned with the topic. Therefore, it is necessary to look for strategies that improve the motivation of students who start a programming course, also improving success rates and decreasing dropout rates. The inverted class model, or flipped classroom, has been used in several experiments, showing very good results. The objectives of this teaching-learning technique is to change the traditional order: students have contact with new subjects before the classroom, using videos, texts or other material, as well as small online tests to check their knowledge. In this way, the face-to-face classes are reserved for discussion, doubts and application of previously acquired knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the scientific production on Flipped classrooms in introductory programming courses indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample is composed by 45 articles in total. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed when and where those documents are published, who the authors are and what the focus of said articles is. We also analysed the most cited documents. We made a summary of the articles, namely in what refers to the sample size of the experiences, which programming language is used, in which universities the articles are made, which technology is used, as well as which methods are used in order to create inverted classes and which are the objectives and results of these experiences reported on the articles.. We managed to get a global view of the theme, getting a strong analysis for those who want to use flipped classrooms for teaching programming.

    Mobile learning in higher education: a bibliometric review

    Changing habits leads to changes in ways of learning and teaching. The widespread use of smartphones appears as an opportunity and at the same time as a need for adoption in higher education institutions. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scientific production on mobile learning in higher education in journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample was composed by 450 articles in total. The results obtained by bibliometric analysis showed that the publication rates continue to increase, in which journals they are published, which are the organizations and countries that publish the most, how the evolution of perspective has changed since 2010 and which are the most cited articles. We concluded that since mobile learning in higher education is a reality, there still seems to be a possibility for evolution in good quality publications.
