It is foreseen that tourism will continue to expand in the future and will spread all around the world. In Europe, the tourism sector is made of 440 million international arrivals that are responsible for accounting about 10% of European GDP and generating 20lmillion of jobs. Coastal destinations are major tourist destination. Nevertheless, sun-sea-sand tourism depends very much on the environment. In this way, coastal destination ought to be properly planned so they do not exceed the limits of acceptable change (LAC) of the ecosystems, and keep their attractiveness. Being an economic activity, it is essential that coastal tourism is competitive, and show capacity to attracting new and enlarged markets. Coastal destination should diversify its products and services, smooth seasonality and become more competitive. Diversification should create more growth and employment, and also reduce environment, economic and social impact caused by the concentration of tourism activity in a few months of the year and the use of only the beach resource. This paper aims at analyzing the application of the competitiveness concept to tourism in coastal areas (Ria de Aveiro region, Central Portugal), and draws attention to the principle of environment, economical and social sustainability. Publication Open Access Analytical Model for the Development Strategy of a Low-Density Territory: The Montesinho Natural Park2022-04-06 - Sousa, Cristina; Silva, Fátima Matos; Albuquerque, HelenaMontesinho Natural Park is one of the largest Portuguese natural protected areas, presenting good biodiversity and a cultural heritage with a strong connection to the territory and its people. It constitutes a low-density territory, characterized by a human and social landscape based on community practices, such as joint aid and the community use of goods and means of agricultural production, which have contributed to the construction of the “transmontana” identity and to the richness of the habitats. The promotion of the sustainable development of this low-density rural region demands the understanding of its specificities and an appropriate approach to grasp its challenges and develop effective management tools, allowing to preserve and exploit the region’s potential from various perspectives. The purpose of this article is to develop an analytical model using a literature review and a survey of the region’s specificities. This analytical model intends to provide the basis for designing and assessing sustainable development solutions, increasing local entrepreneurship and community empowerment through regional dynamism, with a focus on environment and heritage preservation, universal tourism accessibility, collective memory and endogenous product development. The suggested model adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and stresses that, in order to ensure that the new initiatives will contribute to the territory’s sustainable development, they should be scrutinized by asking four main questions: Is the initiative promoting the rural development of the territory through the creation of synergies between agroforestry and tourism activities? Is the initiative promoting an inclusive and sustainable tourism that is based on the territory’s resources? Are heritage and collective memory being preserved and valued through the initiative? Is the initiative promoting the empowerment of local communities?Publication Open Access A development strategy of a low-density territory [entrada em enciclopédia]2022-04-14 - Sousa, Cristina; Albuquerque, Helena; Silva, Fátima MatosMontesinho Natural Park is one of the largest Portuguese natural protected areas, presenting good biodiversity and a cultural heritage with a strong connection to the territory and its people. An exploratory–descriptive survey study was carried out, focusing on quantitative analysis of the perspectives and experiences of participants in the Coldplay tour in Brazil in March 2023. Data were collected through a questionnaire applied to participants who attended shows in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. The virtual accessibility of the website and the communication was also analysed, as well as the distinctive features of these shows, in order to achieve sustainability and allow universal accessibility. Amongst the main results, it was possible to identify perceptions and positive impacts left by the band, which showed that it is possible to celebrate, entertain and bring people together sustainably. It was also found that sustainable events are important in raising environmental awareness and education and catalysts for wider societal changes. This becomes a concrete example of how conscious and responsible action can be integrated into different sectors and activities. Integrating sustainability and universal accessibility into everyday activities will build a better world for present and future generations.Publication Open Access Sustainable tourism in coastal zones: A case study2004 - Martins, Filomena; Albuquerque, Helena
