Abstract
Infertility is a demanding and potentially stress-inducing medical condition, which can trigger anxious and depressive symptoms in women. However, this relationship can be explained by emotional regulation strategies such as self-criticism. This study aims to explore the mediating role of self-criticism in the relationship between infertility-specific stress and anxious and depressive symptomatology. A total of 130 women diagnosed with infertility and/or trying to conceive for more than 12 months, aged between 18 and 45 years, participated in this study. The sampling method was non-probability through snowball sampling. Data were collected through an online platform, after the dissemination of the study on social networks created specifically for this purpose. The results obtained through the mediation models showed significant direct effects on the relationship between infertility-specific stress and anxious and depressive symptomatology, indicating that higher levels of infertility stress are associated with higher levels of anxious and depressive symptomatology. However, significant indirect effects were also identified, showing that this relationship can be explained by self-critical attitudes. Infertility is a stress-inducing situation and there is a propensity for the development of a critical inner dialogue, increasing vulnerability to the emergence of anxious and depressive symptomatology. In this sense, an intervention based on Compassion Focused Therapy may be particularly suitable for this population.
