Abstract
The university context can be challenging, involving high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout. The main objective of this study was to develop and test the effectiveness of a brief online intervention focused on gratitude to reduce stress and burnout and promote mental health in university students. This quasi-experimental study involved 117 university students, of whom 68 agreed to participate voluntarily in a 4-week intervention, being randomly allocated in one of the two intervention groups – focused on gratitude (n = 32) and focused on compassion (n = 36). Participants considered the intervention to be very useful and were highly motivated. Still, the frequency of the gratitude practices was low during the intervention. Results showed no differences between the two intervention groups at pre- and post-test. Moreover, the gratitude intervention was effective in improving mental health and self-compassion, as well as reducing stress of the university students with differences reflecting large effect sizes. Despite being a pilot study, this study provides evidence for the acceptability and relevance of this brief online intervention to foster well-being among university students.
