Abstract
Ecotourism has become increasingly important and should be strategically managed to contribute to the local development of eco-destinations, providing significant economic benefits at local, regional, and national levels. Thus, this study aimed to investigate what concepts or constructs are used to define ecotourism from the perspective of place-making and destination marketing as the chosen approach to ecotourism management. An extensive analysis of previous systematic literature reviews and papers allowed us to collect insights about the main concepts considered in the ecotourism domain. The results show that ecotourism presents two significant ideas in its definition: societal sustainability and responsible travel, which all stakeholders should equate to creating a management process and a systematic conservation plan. One developed these topics in their details or practical domains. This review analysis was the base for the theoretical substantiation of an ecotourism management model of assessment that includes aims, tools, operational domains, and stakeholders’ engagement. The study's conclusions have significant implications for ecotourism practice, helping authorities’ policies and other stakeholders’ decisions to develop sustainable eco-destinations.
