Abstract
In this paper, we focus on the significance and semantics of ideology, starting from the history of economic thought. Our conclusion, drawing on the contributions of Marx, Schumpeter, and Lawson, is that ideology, correctly conceived, is a distinct, irreplaceable category, unavoidable in economics. This conception of ideology also explains why ontology matters to distinguish science and ideology.
