The issue of sustainability in family firms

Abstract

Com a crescente conscientização da importância da sustentabilidade, cujo efeito no mundo empresarial é duradouro e impactante, surge a pergunta: como é que as empresas familiares lidam com as novas tendências relacionadas com as práticas sustentáveis? Além disso, de que forma é que elas podem alcançar a sustentabilidade ao longo de várias gerações? Apesar dos esforços de investigadores e profissionais para estudar a questão da sustentabilidade, as pesquisas ainda são muito esparsas e dispersas e pouco se sabe acerca de como estas empresas actuam nesse aspecto. Neste sentido, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura (RSL) com o objetivo de mapear e avaliar o território intelectual da sustentabilidade em empresas familiares. Com base numa amostra de 79 artigos científicos obtidos a partir da base de dados ISI Web of Knowledge, constatou-se que a sustentabilidade no contexto das empresas familiares é uma área de investigação em crescimento, tendo atingido o seu pico de estudos em 2018. Através da identificação das principais abordagens teóricas e da configuração de nove clusters de artigos científicos, determinou-se que as empresas familiares beneficiam de certas peculiaridades que as levam a ser sustentavelmente conscientes. Direcções para pesquisas futuras nesta área foram propostas. With the increasing awareness of the importance of sustainability, whose effect on the corporate world is lasting and impactful, one question arises: how do family firms lead with the new tendencies related to sustainable practices? Moreover, how can they attain sustainability over multiple generations? Despite the efforts put forth by both researchers and practitioners to study the issue of sustainability, the research is still very sparse and dispersed and little is known about how these firms act in this regard. Accordingly, a systematic literature review (SLR) was performed in order to map and assess the intellectual territory of sustainability in family firms. Based on a sample of 79 scientific papers obtained from the ISI Web of Knowledge database, it was found that sustainability in the context of family firms is a growing field of study, having reached its peak of study in 2018. Through the identification of main theoretical approaches and the setting of nine clusters of scientific papers, it was determined that family firms benefit from certain peculiarities that bring forth sustainability awareness. Directions for future research in this area have been proposed.
