Migration and export performance: The role of the diaspora remittances
2024-03-26 - Pacheco, Luís Miguel; Maldonado, Isabel; Lobo, Carla Azevedo
Migration and international trade represent two fundamental and interconnected aspects of globalization. This paper studies the impact of migration on bilateral trade, using data for remittances as a proxy for migrants in an augmented panel data gravity model framework. Using data for Portuguese bilateral trade with 187 countries for the period 2008-2017, and controlling for other determinants of trade through a standard gravity model, we find that there is a significant impact of remittances on bilateral trade both in terms of exports and imports, particularly regarding some specific types of goods. The evidence of a significant relation between migration and trade has important implications, since it can provide policymakers an alternative option to promote trade and internationalization beyond conventional trade policy.

Circular Economy and International Business: Innovation, Sustainability, and Environmental Impact [editorial]
2025-12-27 - Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Santos-Pereira, Carla; Azevedo, Mónica; Carvalho, Margarita
As global markets transition towards sustainability, the Circular Economy is emerging not only as a key driver of innovation and long-term business success but also as a powerful framework for environmental protection and ecosystem regeneration. Companies are increasingly compelled to rethink traditional business models, aligning them with circular principles that prioritize the reduction of environmental degradation, the regeneration of natural resources, and the minimization of waste. This Special Issue investigates how firms, industries, and economies apply circular economy strategies within international business while addressing broader environmental challenges and complying with evolving environmental regulations. We seek original research and review articles that explore the intersection of the circular economy, environmental governance, and international business. Topics of interest include sustainable business strategies that reduce environmental impact, the role of digitalization in enabling low-carbon and resource-efficient transitions, the redesign of global value chains with ecological considerations, and the policy mechanisms that drive circularity with environmental integrity. Contributions may examine how multinational corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and emerging market actors adopt circular practices to enhance both competitiveness and environmental responsibility. Submissions may address, but are not limited to: business models for the circular economy in environmentally regulated international markets; sustainable and circular supply chains with low ecological footprints; the influence of international environmental agreements and trade regulations on circular practices; environmental policy and governance as enablers of circular innovation; consumer behavior regarding eco-friendly and circular products; green investment and financing models; environmental impact metrics for circular performance; and institutional and corporate frameworks promoting systemic environmental change. By bringing together a wide range of insights from academia, industry, and environmental policy, this Special Issue aims to advance understanding of how circular economy principles can help reshape international business dynamics while contributing to climate goals, ecological sustainability, and a greener global economy.

The interplay of innovation and internationalisation in the foreign market entry mode and international market selection process of SMEs
2023-12-15 - Azevedo, Mónica; Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Santos-Pereira, Carla; Durão, Natércia; Gerschewski, Stephan
In an interconnected, globalised world where the success of companies increasingly relies on internationalisation, innovation has emerged as a crucial strategic decision for firm’s strong development and competitiveness. While there tends to be a consensus in the literature regarding the growing significance of internationalisation and innovation, certain questions arise regarding the relationship between innovation and entry modes with lower market commitment as well as destination markets with lower risks. This study aims to investigate whether a discernible pattern of relationship exists between internationalisation modes, destination markets, and innovation among small and medium-sized Portuguese firms. To accomplish this research objective, we developed and distributed an online questionnaire survey and collected empirical data from Portuguese SMEs. The final dataset consisted of 310 valid responses, which were subjected to statistical analysis using IBM SPSS 27.0 Statistics software. Considering the categorical nature of the data (measured on a nominal or ordinal scale), we applied robust quantitative analysis techniques. More specifically, we employed exploratory statistical analyses, including univariate and multivariate exploratory factorial analysis (EFA), as well as inferential analysis (e.g., Spearman's correlation and Chi-square test for correlation analysis, and Mann-Whitney nonparametric test). Our findings provide empirical evidence that companies employing internationalisation modes requiring greater commitment, along with those targeting geographically and psycho-logically distant destination markets, tend to attach greater importance to innovation as a determinant of internationalisation. Our study carries important theoretical and practical implications.

The role of leadership and strategic alliances in innovation and digital transformation for sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems: A comprehensive analysis of the existing literature
2025-07-05 - Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Marinho, Arlindo; Santos-Pereira, Carla; Azevedo, Mónica; Moreira, Fernando
In the context of accelerating digital transformation and growing sustainability imperatives, entrepreneurial ecosystems increasingly rely on open innovation and strategic collaboration to foster resilient, knowledge-driven growth. This study aims to examine how leadership behaviors and strategic alliances interact as enablers of sustainable innovation across macro (systemic), meso (organizational), and micro (individual) levels. To achieve this, this study employs a literature review, supported by bibliometric analysis, as its core methodological approach. Drawing on 86 influential publications from 1992 to 2024, two major thematic streams emerge: leadership dynamics in entrepreneurial settings and the formation and governance of strategic alliances as vehicles for innovation. The findings underscore the pivotal role of transformational and ethical leadership in cultivating trust-based inter-organizational relationships, facilitating digital knowledge sharing, and catalyzing sustainable value creation. Simultaneously, strategic alliances enhance organizational agility and innovation capacity through co-creation mechanisms, digital platforms, and crowdsourcing, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This paper highlights a mutually reinforcing relationship: effective leadership strategies empower alliances, while alliance participation enhances leadership capabilities through experiential learning in diverse, digitalized environments. By bridging leadership theory, open innovation practices, and digital transformation, this study offers critical insights for entrepreneurs, managers, and policymakers seeking to drive inclusive and sustainable innovation within interconnected global markets. Therefore, this study provides practical guidance for business leaders aiming to strengthen alliance performance through adaptive leadership and for policymakers seeking to foster innovation ecosystems through supportive regulatory and institutional frameworks.

Adoption of Generative AI in Portuguese Higher Education: An Empirical Study of Perceptions and Academic Practices
2026-03-24 - Santos-Pereira, Carla; Durão, Natércia; Ferreira, Maria João; Sobral, Sónia Rolland; Lobo, Carla Azevedo; Moreira, Fernando
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is diffusing rapidly in higher education, yet empirical evidence from Portugal remains limited. We conducted an online questionnaire (n = 77) targeting higher-education faculty and researchers in Portugal and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis). Participants most frequently reported using QuillBot, followed by Bing Chat and ChatPDF, with a sizable minority indicating the use of additional, unlisted GenAI applications and reported use cases clustered around idea generation, drafting, summarization, proofreading, and coding, while trust and appropriateness varied by task type. Inferential tests suggested differences by gender and by discipline for selected items (e.g., p-value=0.008, p-value=0.039, p-value=0.023); given the small and imbalanced subgroups, these findings should be interpreted cautiously and supplemented with effect sizes and confidence intervals. No statistically significant differences by age or gender were observed for the ethical-concerns items. We discuss implications for training, assessment, and policy design, and outline pragmatic recommendations for responsible GenAI integration in Portuguese higher education.
