Carla Azevedo Lobo é doutorada em Gestão pela Universidade Portucalense. É Professora Auxiliar da Universidade Portucalense e leciona em cursos de Licenciatura, Mestrado e Doutoramento, na área das Ciências Empresariais. É também Coordenadora do Curso de Licenciatura em Gestão, desde 2010. É investigadora do REMIT (Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies). Foi a Investigadora Responsável do Projeto de Investigação ("IEcPBI”) na área dos Negócios Internacionais, financiado pelo COMPETE 2020, FEDER e FCT, entre 2018 - 2022. REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies
Centro de investigação que que tem como objetivo principal produzir e disseminar conhecimento teórico e aplicado que possibilite uma maior compreensão das dinâmicas e tendências económicas, empresariais, territoriais e tecnológicas do mundo contemporâneo e dos seus efeitos socioeconómicos. O REMIT adota uma perspetiva multidisciplinar que integra vários domínios científicos: Economia e Gestão; Ciências e Tecnologia; Turismo, Património e Cultura. Founded in 2017, REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies is a research unit of Portucalense University. Based on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective it aims at responding to social challenges through a holistic approach involving a wide range of scientific fields such as Economics, Management, Science, Technology, Tourism, Heritage and Culture. Grounded on the production of advanced scientific knowledge, REMIT has a special focus on its application to the resolution of real issues and challenges, having as strategic orientations: - the understanding of local, national and international environment; - the development of activities oriented to professional practice, namely in the business world.

    Migration and export performance: The role of the diaspora remittances

    Migration and international trade represent two fundamental and interconnected aspects of globalization. This paper studies the impact of migration on bilateral trade, using data for remittances as a proxy for migrants in an augmented panel data gravity model framework. Using data for Portuguese bilateral trade with 187 countries for the period 2008-2017, and controlling for other determinants of trade through a standard gravity model, we find that there is a significant impact of remittances on bilateral trade both in terms of exports and imports, particularly regarding some specific types of goods. The evidence of a significant relation between migration and trade has important implications, since it can provide policymakers an alternative option to promote trade and internationalization beyond conventional trade policy.

    Inducing factors that can affect the success of internationalization: Comparative study for Portuguese firms

    The challenges that companies face in their internationalization strategy are naturally demanding. If we think that this strategy is no longer exclusive to large companies, we can easily understand all the research that has been carried out on this subject and more specifically on the approach to SMEs. Even so, little has been discussed about the relationship that can be established between the different strategic approaches to internationalization and the factors that entrepreneurs most value in this entrepreneurial process. Based on an exhaustive literature review, in addition to determining the driving factors of the internationalization strategy that Portuguese entrepreneurs most value, this research aims to assess, through a comparative study between the entrepreneurs' perspectives in 2014 and 2019, the possible oscillations in the international strategies of Portuguese entrepreneurs during the period of economic crisis (2014) and a post-crisis period (2019). To achieve these objectives, we used data from a questionnaire sent to "exporting companies and/or companies interested in exporting" from the AICEP - Portugal Global Database, in 2014 and later in 2019.

    The impact of entrepreneurial ecosystems on digital transformation: A meso level analysis

    This work aims to study the impact of meso-level variables of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) on digital transformation. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the research hypotheses, based on multiple linear regression, with a sample of 172 organisations. The results show that actors from the meso dimension of EEs positively impact digital transformation through knowledge, discoveries, guidance, co-opetition, co-creation and stimulation of technological search. The contributions of this study are in bringing a more refined perspective of the incentives of society actors to digital transformation, besides awakening to their importance in organisational processes and showing that associations for the satisfaction of own interests can culminate in common benefits.

    International business performance and the enhancers of the internationalization strategy in Portuguese firms

    As business has become increasingly global, firms have been defied to develop a distinct approach in terms of business resources, skills and capabilities. The way in which these factors are organized and directed depend upon the role played by the entrepreneur within the company. In other words, the entrepreneur's role can define the company's ability to acquire and operationalize its resources, thus being able to influence business performance, especially of international businesses. Research on factors affecting internationalization is attracting growing interest, but few empirical works focus on the perspective of the entrepreneur. Aiming to analyze the existence of an association between international business performance and the factors that act, on the entrepreneur perspective, as enhancers of the internationalization strategy, an online questionnaire survey was conducted with several variables, based on the literature review. Data collected from the 311 valid responses (Portuguese international firms) were treated by IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 software. The statistical analyses used were Descriptive Analysis (frequency analysis, descriptive statistics and graphical representations), Inferential Analysis (Spearman´s ordinal correlation, Kruskall-Wallis Test and Chi-Square Test), Reliability Analysis (Cronbach´s alpha) and Categorical Principal Components Analysis (CATPCA). In accordance with International New Ventures Theory, the Strategic Choice view and Network theory, we found evidence of the positive correlation between international experience of the employees and the percentage of business that resulted from internationalization. We also concluded that there is evidence of the importance of specific skills of the employees, of propensity to take risks and the importance of Networks, in international business performance.

    Exploring the relationship between innovation, entry modes and destination countries

    In a world characterized by globalization, where the internationalization of businesses is pivotal for their prosperity, innovation is emerging as a pivotal strategic choice influencing their growth and competitive edge. Despite the broad consensus on the growing importance of internationalization and innovation, some questions arise about the relationship of innovation with entry modes with less commitment to the market and with destination markets with less risks. In order to determine whether there is a pattern of relationship between internationalization modes, destination markets, and innovation for Portuguese firms, the objective is to study this possibility. To achieve this goal, we carried out an online questionnaire survey to collect data. The questionnaire was carefully designed based on a literature review and included various variables related to the internationalization of firms. It was sent to all 8183 firms listed in the AICEP database of Portuguese internationalized firms through Google Forms tool. The data was collected over an 8-month period, starting in May 2019. To analyze the data, we used IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 software, applying a quantitative approach. We employed Quantitative Analysis Methodologies: Univariate and Multivariate Exploratory Factorial Analysis (EFA), Correlation analysis and the nonparametric tests Chi-square and Mann-Whitney. Based on the findings, the empirical evidence clearly demonstrates that firms employing internationalization modes demanding higher commitment, along with those targeting geographically and psychologically distant markets, place significantly greater emphasis on innovation as a pivotal factor driving their international expansion.

    Do ISO certifications enhance internationalization? The case of portuguese industrial SMEs

    In the last decades, the academic literature has devoted considerable attention to the determinants of export performance. In result of those research efforts in identifying and examining the influence of such determinants, the literature presents a wide set of variables associated with higher levels of exports. This paper provides a contribution to that literature by trying to evidence the impact of firm certification—namely, in terms of the firm’s quality, environmental, and health and safety management systems—on export performance. The paper analyses an unbalanced sample of 1684 Portuguese industrial SMEs for the period 2010 to 2020, uses other determinants of internationalization as control variables, and explores the possibility of moderating effects on the certification–internationalization relationship. Two alternative econometric methods are employed: a random-effects model and a Tobit model. The results evidence the importance for firms, especially in the low or medium–low technology sectors, to have certain ISO certifications in order to further develop their export activities and increase their foreign acceptance, particularly in the European Union markets. Further, certification seems to reinforce the positive relation between firm size and internationalization.

    The impact of market orientation on the internationalisation of SMEs

    Purpose – A key point in the internationalisation process of companies comes with the choice of international market. Following this choice, the results companies may thereby obtain help in measuring their level of international performance. This study aims to measure the impact of internationalisation processes in keeping with company market orientations (MOs) through measuring their effect on international performance. Design/methodology/approach – The authors obtained the data from a questionnaire sent out by email to a total of 8,103 exporting companies and/or with interests in exporting (the study population) registered in the AICEP-Portugal Global database that provided the email addresses of the company representatives responsible for internationalisation. The authors received a total of 320 valid responses (sample). Findings – The results display a positive MO effect both on internationalisation processes and on international performance. The authors also note the importance of studying the influence of strategic orientations on internationalization processes, motivated by the particular SME’s characteristics. Originality/value – The authors aim to contribute to the study of the influence of the MO, both upstream and downstream, thus seeking to verify its impact on internationalization processes.

    Public policies for internationalization: a study for portuguese firms

    Internationalization can be considered as a gradual and evolutionary process in which firms progressively increase their involvement in international business. Most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that internationalize face a variety of constraints in terms of resources and skills, information, financial capital, the experience of their managers, as well as the constraints inherent to the vulnerability of the external environment. Many firms that could succeed in international markets may not have the resources to make the investment. It is also widely acknowledged that the external institutional environment in which firms are embedded may shape firms' strategic responses. Internationalization is a beneficial process for the firm and for the national and local economy and can generate economies of scale in local firms and promote the transfer of technology and managerial knowledge, generating growth and employment. These benefits explain the implementation of export promotion activities and publicly funded programs, as the benefits justify the costs associated with this government expenditure. In light with such facts, governmental assistance may be able to promote the internationalization process of firms. In the international business literature, researchers have examined how home and host market institutions affect the internationalization strategy of multinational enterprises (MNEs), but our focus is to understand how the home institutional environment, and more specifically the public policies act or not as an enhancing factor for internationalization. This paper tackles this question by using a novel survey dataset of 320 Portuguese firms and a quantitative approach based on a regression analysis. We aim at identifying which firm and managerial characteristics are related with a more proficient use of public support for internationalization. The originality of this research lies in the fact that it seeks to ascertain the importance of public policies to support internationalization, in the entrepreneur's perspective.

    Internacionalização precoce: A importância das competências dos colaboradores e das redes relacionais

    Baseado na avaliação das opiniões de diferentes empresários, este estudo procura averiguar qual a importância atribuída a diversos fatores considerados potenciadores/indutores do processo de internacionalização por parte das empresas que se internacionalizam cedo no seu ciclo de vida. São considerados fatores como as redes relacionais, as competências específicas dos empresários e a experiência internacional dos colaboradores. O estudo empírico é efetuado com base numa amostra de 320 empresas portuguesas sendo utilizadas metodologias de Análise Exploratória de Dados e metodologias de Inferência Estatística Univariada. Foram encontradas evidências da importância para os empresários portugueses das Redes Relacionais, bem como das Competências Específicas dos Colaboradores, da Experiência Internacional dos Colaboradores, em consonância com a Teoria das Redes, a Teoria do Capital Humano, a Teoria das International New Ventures, a Population Ecology Approach e com a Attention Based View.
