Developing business tourism beyond major urban centres: The perspectives of local stakeholders
    (2016-05) Marques, Jorge; Santos, Norberto
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify development strategies for Business Tourism in territories where this segment is not always given due consideration, especially at the level of local and regional development policies. Design - The paper discusses the concepts of Business Tourism and analyses the characteristics of a delimited territory in the Central Region of Portugal that encompasses the cities of Coimbra, Aveiro and Viseu, located between the main Portuguese cities, Lisbon and Oporto. Methodology - A Delphi study was conducted to explore the prospects of destination stakeholders, with the aim of identifying proposals and product development measures in this territory. Findings - Despite the lower urban density and lower load capacity, when compared with the main urban centres of Lisbon and Oporto, this territory presents a qualified and diverse tourism offer that combined with the existence of differentiated venues and quality accommodation can contribute to provide a valued tourism experience associated with the Meetings Industry. Originality - The study presented here allows us to reflect on the potential of Business Tourism in territories with lower urban density and lower supply of facilities and services, when compared to the major cities that usually take the leading positions in international rankings. This is especially true, if we consider that smaller urban centres that are relatively near each other (as is the case of Coimbra, Aveiro and Viseu) may find interesting strategic advantages in joint action, taking into account that these three geographic areas complement each other in the integrated supply of tourism products, experiences, services and facilities.

Service quality in health and wellness tourism: Trends in Portugal
(2011) Quintela, Joana; Correia, Anabela G.; Antunes, Joaquim G.
The purpose of this study was to: a) analyze the impact of service quality on client satisfaction; b) identify travel behavior and c) assess the attributes that are more important and more satisfaction-oriented from the client point of view. These objectives are designed to provide health and wellness tourism units with a better understanding of the market; help them match supply to the needs, wishes and attitudes of their target markets and draw up improved plans for developing their potential. The empirical data, collected in five Portuguese hot springs units, was evaluated using a modified SERVQUAL scale. Attributes designated as more pleasing, and those receiving more emphasis, were assessed through the Importance-Performance-Analysis model. Travel behavior was assessed by means of a purpose-made questionnaire. In terms of service quality, we confirmed that aspects relating to attendance ("ability of the employee to perform accurately and dependably", "employee's willingness to help the customer and provide prompt service", "capacity to provide individualized attention") were more satisfying for users of these units. Through the IPA, we established that the attributes of "quality / price ratio"; "quality of complementary services (lodging and leisure)"; and "geographic location (quality of transport and accessibility)" offered were of less interest to clients. Implications for Portugal were discussed.

However, these kind of tourism face a multitude of challenges and one of that challenges is the discrepance on its different conceptual approaches and definitions. A literature review on this topic with a descriptive, comparative and exploratory nature was conducted, building a theoretical framework on this field of study. Units of meaning for the definition of the concept categories were elected, which allowed to reflect and sintetize the different approaches to the topic. This analysis brought other perspectives of identification and description of distinct themes, including a few issues about health, wellness, medical tourism, wellbeing and quality of life. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to summarize and clarify this complex and sweeping concept that assumes in a prominent role in the global context of tourism and results in a concise overview of the literature produced on the subject towards a small contribution to a better understanding of the concept.

Influence of service quality and satisfaction in future behavioural intentions among health and wellness users
(2014-10) Quintela, Joana; Correia, Anabela G.
This paper analyses the influence of service quality and satisfaction in future behavioral intentions in health and wellness tourists. Service quality was defined by Parasuraman, Zeithaml e Berry (1985) through the SERVQUAL scale with five dimensions: tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. To analyse the future behavioral intentions, we considered the return and recommend intentions. A survey was conducted at five health and wellness tourism units situated in the central region of Portugal and the sample was constituted by a total of 268 users. The result analysis permitted to verify that service quality and satisfaction influences future behavioral intentions. It appears to be evident that the dimensions of assurance and empathy are the ones that most influence future behavioral intentions. In what concerns to satisfaction, we verify that it’s related with these both intentions, but mainly with the intention to return and to and reuse those health and wellness services. These results and the implications for health and wellness tourism organizations are discussed.

Tourism development strategies for business tourism destinations: Case study in the central region of Portugal
    (2017) Marques, Jorge; Santos, Norberto
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a Delphi study about the strategic importance of business tourism in the Central Region of Portugal (territory encompassing the cities of Coimbra, Aveiro and Viseu), where the presence of a qualified and diverse tourism offer combined with the existence of varied venues and quality accommodation can contribute to provide a valued tourism experience associated with the meetings Industry. This study allows a reflection on the potential of business tourism in territories where this sector is not always given due attention by local, regional and national tourism bodies. These smaller urban centres (compared with the main urban centres of Lisbon and Oporto), relatively close to each other, may find strategic advantages in joint action, considering that these three geographic areas complement each other in the integrated supply of tourism products, experiences, support services and facilities. Primary data was collected through a Delphi study with the aim of identifying regional tourism stakeholders' perceptions of the importance and potential of business tourism development and strategies that should be put in place to this end. The results show that stakeholders identify business tourism as a strategic product that should be developed, and indicate some development strategies to be considered in this territory.

Business tourism development: A portuguese perspective
(Universidad de Murcia, 2017-11) Marques, Jorge; Santos, Norberto
Over time, not only new leisure practices were developed but also new types of work, with globalization leading to a greater need for commercial, industrial and knowledge expansion, stimulating business travel. Therefore, long ago that tourism does not only refer on travel motivated by leisure and recreation. Travels motivated by business and professions, which consist of one of the oldest forms of travel, saw their “tourist status” officially recognized by the end of the twentieth century. Today, Business Tourism (also known as Meeting Industry) represents a significant role on local and regional economies and reveals a considerable potential for development. In this context, Destination Management Organizations (DMO), and more specifically Convention & Visitors Bureaus (CVB), play a key role in providing the structure associated with the territory and the management, planning and development of destinations, especially those who want to position themselves as Business Tourism destinations. This article aims to explore a few topics concerning the evolution of Business Tourism, its importance and context in Portugal.

Achieving forms of sustainable and competitive tourism in coastal areas: The case of Baixo Vouga
(2009) Albuquerque, Helena; Martins, Filomena; Costa, Carlos
Tourism has become the world's largest industry, and has overcome economic sectors such as oil production and car manufacturing. It is foreseen that tourism will continue to expand in the future and will spread all around the world. In Europe, the tourism sector is made of 440 million international arrivals that are responsible for accounting about 10% of European GDP and generating 20lmillion of jobs. Coastal destinations are major tourist destination. Nevertheless, sun-sea-sand tourism depends very much on the environment. In this way, coastal destination ought to be properly planned so they do not exceed the limits of acceptable change (LAC) of the ecosystems, and keep their attractiveness. Being an economic activity, it is essential that coastal tourism is competitive, and show capacity to attracting new and enlarged markets. Coastal destination should diversify its products and services, smooth seasonality and become more competitive. Diversification should create more growth and employment, and also reduce environment, economic and social impact caused by the concentration of tourism activity in a few months of the year and the use of only the beach resource. This paper aims at analyzing the application of the competitiveness concept to tourism in coastal areas (Ria de Aveiro region, Central Portugal), and draws attention to the principle of environment, economical and social sustainability.

    Enotourism ecosystem: stakeholders´coopetition model proposal.
    (2016) Salvado, Josefina
